NEW RELEASE - Dive into the UNKNOWN

"Anonymity has its benefits. It allows you to slip under the radar; it allows you to meet the world on your own terms. Fashion tends not to reap the benefits of inconspicuousness, but there are exceptions."

The inspiration behind the "Unknown Watches" brand lies in the history of the humble wristwatch itself. The first wristwatches were born out of necessity; to know the time in places where a pocket watch would have proved cumbersome. However, the creator of one of the most ubiquitous of objects remains...unknown.

From their Shoreditch based studio in London, the creators of Unknown have drawn inspiration from the world of arts, fashion and vintage design to create an impeccably crafted range of watches that are the epitome of stylish, yet discrete, timekeeping. What's even better is that they've arrived just in time to take no.1 spot on your Christmas wish list.

Dive into the Unknown with three stylish debut collections that fuse minimal aesthetic with the sensibilities of a classic watch.

The minimal design of the Unknown Classic Watches focuses on clean and refined design which satisfies a modern interest in avoiding undue prominence of brand and lets the quality of design and build speak for itself.

The Unknown Dandy Watches feature Roman numerals and a subtle date window positioned at 3 o'clock. Available in either a Black & Gold or Navy & Rose Gold, the Dandy also features a highly accurate Miyota Quartz movement.

The collection is rounded off with a selection of nature inspired urban watches called Unknown Natural Science  which feature illustrated watch faces.

Shop The Look // Mid Century Modern

Mid-Century Modern refers to the style of furniture, art and architecture popularised during the mid-20th century, the term being cemented by Carla Greenberg in her 1983 book "Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950's". It is seen as one of the most popular, collectable and dynamic periods in international design history.
Designs from the mid-century period combine beauty, innovation , and function for an aesthetic that is utterly timeless. Characterised by their pared-down forms, sweeping clean lines, variety of colour, unique materials and superb quality, the modern day popularity of these mid-century pieces is a testament to the talent of designers of the time such as Charles and Ray Eames, Hans J Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Eero Saarinen and Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe.

Something to Smile about - Arne Jacobsen Typeface Revived

Danish design company "Design Letters" have made a name for themselves since forming in 2009 and have earned a reputation for sleek typography.

In 2011 they took steps to revive the classic typeface originally created in 1937 by world renowned Architect Arne Jacobsen for internal signage in the Aarhus City Hall, Denmark.

Get creative with the versatile range of handleless porcelain cups by using them as mugs, pencil pots, vases, or for a person touch, use them to create words: TEA, MUM, LOVE, etc.

UMBRAlievable - Modern design doesn't get more accessible than this!

Canadian design company Umbra was born 31 years ago when graphic designer Paul Rowan couldn't find a nice window shade to hang in his new apartment window. So he made one...and others liked it! He soon teamed up with friend and industrial hardware manufacturer, Les Mandelbaum, and Umbra was born.

Since that time Umbra has grown to become the world leader of modern, original, casual and affordable design for the home - introducing designs that have broken the mould and creating entirely new categories in the home decor and gift market.

Utility are proud to be one of the largest retailers of Umbra in the UK and we're very pleased to introduce a host of new home accessories & giftware products that, like all Umbra designs, inject personality and a sense of magic into any interior.

Umbra's comprehensive catalogue, from photo display units to quirky hook/hangers, is creative, innovative and modern, all the while remaining highly affordable. Modern design doesn't get more accessible than this.

Introducing 'WRONG for HAY'

Initially showcased during the London Design Festival 2013, "Wrong for Hay", the collaborative venture between Danish design label, Hay and London based designer Sebastian Wrong, enjoyed a successful global debut at Salone Milan.

The collection, which comprises  furniture, textiles and accessories from designers such as Nathalie Du Pasquier, Faudet-Harrison and Lucein Gumy, is based in London and is clearly inspired by the city's creative energy, eclecticism and willingness to explore new working relationships, products and markets.
"Wrong for Hay is an opportunity to push the boundaries in terms of curation. We can be experimental and sophisticated but also pragmatic. It's a platform for new work that celebrates London's design culture" says the brands creative director, Sebastian Wrong.

Hay's principle of good design at accessible prices is central to the collection with Wrong stating that "a huge part of the brief was to hit a certain price point, which is very important for us, and I think we've succeeded in doing that".

We've compiled a list of what we think are the most exciting products from the new collection and made them available in our online store. Come and take a look!

Well Dressed

Launched this spring is the Dressed range of watches from Alessi. Created my Dutch design genius Marcel Wanders this family of watches offers something for everyone - whatever your style. Each watch has the same case and distinctive design running through it - or in this case on the back. Like so many Wanders' designs the true beauty is only revealed on inspection with each dial having a pattern on the reverse - the idea being that only the wearer knows of its presence - a final touch in being dressed for the occasion. Classic masculine proportions give way to fine detailing on the exquisite hour hand. Markings are a combination of contemporary dots or classic numerals with the collection appealing to any colour preference - from cutting edge steel to classic black to vibrant orange and two gold options. Marcel Wanders signature silhouette is shown on each dial.

Lust after Lustre!

Lustre is a new series of pendant lights from Tom Dixon. A departure for the company, the range is hand made from stoneware by a small Dutch, family run company established over five generations. Each light has a unique look created during the manufacturing process whereby an iridescent glaze containing minerals and precious metals is used to dazzling effect. This attaches itself to the stoneware in a unique way to give an 'oil on water' effect. As each light is totally unique the colors achieved during the process range from a pale lime to a deep green. There are four shapes in the family - Lustre Round, Lustre Wedge, Lustre Flat and Lustre Square. They're each priced at £360 and are available to order now!
