New Foscarini Releases for 2013
Foscarini's collection of new releases is a result of intense collaboration with a host of masters and brilliant upcoming talent. Each embody Foscarini's vision for cutting edge design and tell a unique story, addressing modern day needs with striking beauty. The seductive texture of Ludovica & Roberto Palomba's Rituals focuses upon the strong contrast between light and dark generated by subtle bands of blown and frosted glass which decorate the diffuser. These filter and diffuse the intensity of the light source suggesting its main influence, Japanese paper lanterns. The table lamp, has a simple die cast zinc alloy tripod base with an rough epoxy powder paint finish whereas the pendant permits the diffuser to gracefully inhabit the space it occupies. Both include three complementary shapes, expanding the collection to suit a diverse range of settings.
Yoko's illuminated heart of white light floods the centre of the lamp creating a suffused and vibrant atmosphere. Norwegian design duo Anderssen & Voll, placed the light source within the polycarbonate base breaking the traditional configuration. This creates a dialogue between the two different volumes, the base and bubble shaped iridescent diffuser. Constructed using PMMA and blow moulding technology, Yoko is not only lightweight but also unbreakable. The atmospheric reflections are accentuated with the availability of three delicate colours; orange, green and violet - inspired by Nordic nature.
A simple tilt of the concave Flip Wall Light, by Simon Pengelly, permits the direction of light to be adjusted - customise its warm luminosity to reflect off the ceiling or to highlight an object below. The diffuser sits upon a dynamic frame, attached to a central pivot at the pinnacle of its curvature, allowing Flip to be efficiently adapted. Irregular cuts add a unique visual personality and also leak indirect light, transforming Flip from an functional light source into a sculptural installation.

New lighting additions from Flos
Launched in Milan this year Flos have now released three new designs which are now available to order. The Aim Light by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec is a fantastic 'installation' suspension light which does as it's name suggests and can be directed in different positions. Used singularly or grouped together in a maximum of 5 from one rose it's available in black or white.
Reinterpreting a design classic is a modern these in contemporary design and the Goldman Lamp, by Ron Gilad, is no exception. Goldman gives the original banker's lamp a whole new, refined image. Referencing the past in original green and bronze there's also a bang on trend version in nickel and smoke - ideal for the modern office. Soft touch LED technology adds to its allure.
Finally Orotund by Marc Newson rounds up the trio. In white polycarbonate this round wall light combines practical illumination with sculptural flair for a statement any wall would be grateful for.

Tom Dixon - The Rough and The Smooth
You can now peruse Tom Dixon's 2013 collection on the Utility website which focuses on contrasting textures - the rough and the smooth. Ranges have been expanded and new product families have emerged to remind us of Tom Dixon's creativity and innovation. The Cell range reaffirms his sensitivity towards brass by using layers of minutely etched metal to filter light for a dramatic visual light display. Digressing away from intricate lighting solutions, such as the Etched Web Pendant, this dense etched pattern creates a more solid structure with a definite presence. Cell looks particularly arresting when grouped together thanks to their geometric configurations. A brass crowned bulb has been exclusively developed for the Short Cell Pendant Light and Wall Light reinforcing its golden glow.
Gem offers the perfect juxtaposition, the sand-cast nickel-plated aluminium surface is alive with texture. Each piece proudly embraces the marks of its construction - a unique imprint of the rough sand. From the Wide Pendant Light to the High Side Table, their tactile exterior is pronounced via facets, inspired by cut gem stones. Mass is equally as expressive, using minimalist forms to create confident over-scaled furniture with a dominant charisma. The Book Stand and Coat Stand are brass-clad and the Dining Table, copper which develop a natural patina over time.
The Drum Stool's bold geometry has really caught our eye and we're sure its highly adaptable shape will add a subtle design injection into any environment. Available in a range of Kvadrat fabrics, Drum is suitable for a range of contract and domestic uses.

Amongst the pages of beautiful architecture, historical sights and the best places to rest your head is a double page spread dedicated to Utility! Örsjö Lighting
The clean Scandinavian lines and effortless styling of Örsjö now grace the Utility website. Each product is lovingly crafted by expert hands in Småland, south east Sweden, an area which is renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and strong tradition of design and handicraft. Collaborating with inspirational designers has enabled Örsjö to honour their goal of creating classic shapes for modern needs. Their dedication to the production of timeless lighting fixtures is evident through the Ginko Pendant Light, which was awarded the Best Light Award from design magazine Wallpaper* in 2008. Designed by Norman Says, it was inspired by the organic shapes of the Ginko Biloba tree and is available in a number of attractive hues.
We predict big things for the matt brass Puck Floor Light and rough copper Star Circular Ceiling or Pendant Light whose golden finishes enliven their minimalist qualities. Relinquishing the ornate and elaborate, each are a contemporary vision championing refined shapes with practicality in mind. Puck's cylindrical adjustable diffuser and slim stem clearly fulfills these objectives. Star is a halo of illumination accommodating nine light fittings with adjustable brass joints. We love the fact that it can be specified, on order, to be wall mounted or fitted with suspension cables to become a striking pendant light which is also available with a white lacquered finish. Bespoke sizes can even be made if you have bigger things in mind, just contact us and we will be glad to help realise your vision.

Zeitraum Furniture
Zeitraum isn't just furniture, Zeitraum is an attitude to life and the things around us. The objects which accompany us through life should have character, whilst also being practical, adaptable and unobtrusive. They are a mirror and an expression of their owner, a servant and a friend. Zeitraum furniture is attractive because of its exceptionally good quality, not because of designer frills. It impresses without dominating – exciting in its simplicity. Don't just take our word for it though see the Zeitraum collection!

Well Dressed
Launched this spring is the Dressed range of watches from Alessi. Created my Dutch design genius Marcel Wanders this family of watches offers something for everyone - whatever your style. Each watch has the same case and distinctive design running through it - or in this case on the back. Like so many Wanders' designs the true beauty is only revealed on inspection with each dial having a pattern on the reverse - the idea being that only the wearer knows of its presence - a final touch in being dressed for the occasion. Classic masculine proportions give way to fine detailing on the exquisite hour hand. Markings are a combination of contemporary dots or classic numerals with the collection appealing to any colour preference - from cutting edge steel to classic black to vibrant orange and two gold options. Marcel Wanders signature silhouette is shown on each dial.

Keep it Local
With the demise of Jessops and the future of yet another retail stalwart (HMV) hanging in the balance the picture for our high streets looks bleaker than ever. Whilst it would be easy to blame the likes of Amazon and Ebay for providing customers what they want at lesser prices than bricks and mortar (b&m) retailers, traditional retail operators should also look to their own business models and, in particular, the constant need to adapt and change in accordance with customer's demands and expectations to tackle the online onslaught. We're all guilty of supporting Amazon and Ebay, helping their growth to the
behemoths we see today but that wouldn't have necessarily happened if b&m
retailers had been more competitive in the first place (easy to say I
know when pure online operations don't have the rent/rates/staff etc overhead).
Competition isn't always measured on price, though. Whilst price is the key governing factor in the decision to purchase, traditional retailers offer one thing which their digital counterparts don't - face to face customer contact and personal service - and with that comes the opportunity to offer an exceptional customer experience and seize a sale. The fact remains that a lot of the larger retailers have failed to adapt to the digital age, resulting in their ultimate downfall.
My own experience this weekend exemplifies this. I walked into my local HMV to purchase a list of 15 cds for store music (I won't digital download because of the inflexibility of using on various systems, iTunes monopoly and an old fashioned need to have something physical to hold onto). Working my way through the list I managed to find a grand total of zero - zilch, nothing, not one of them. There was nothing particularly obscure on the list - a bit of Stevie Wonder, Camera Obscura, She & Him, The Shins. I tried to ask a member of staff - none available.
We should all reflect. Purchasing online is easy, sometimes cheaper, invariably convenient and can be done in the comfort of our own homes - all great stuff - but at what price? Your local supplier/ b&m retailer is part of your local economy, brings jobs and careers to the community, animation to the high street and, above all, keeps it local. If we don't support local retailers what will our high streets look like in 10 years? The only commodity you can't buy online is the leisure experience of a cup of coffee or a meal/drink out (there are others I know). Do we really want our streets to merely consists of coffee shops, cafes and restaurants? Whilst these bring their own unique dimension to our shopping experience the tapestry of any street is enriched by a variety of retail offers, without which shopping would be a bland affair.
As an independent retailer we are small enough to be able to adapt to the changing retail scene and react accordingly. We're still growing and opening a further two b&m stores this year - underpinned by our online offer - but we're never complacent or take anything for granted. and work for every sale we achieve. We invest as much time and money in our online offer as we do in our stores. My main message to every b&m retailer and customer is this - before giving in to online, give b&m shops a chance. If you've seen it online cheaper, tell them and show them the website! I'll let you into a secret - invariably big name brands (I won't name them) ask retailers, as part of their trade agreement, to sell at a recommended retail price (rrp) - especially online where the whole world can compare prices. Brands don't like to see this - they want a fair playing field and it just causes them hassle but how they enforce this is 'difficult'. Whilst price fixing is 'illegal' these brands can make it difficult for retailers to sell at less than rrp, particularly online. They may have little jurisdiction over Amazon etc but they can make it awkward for smaller retailers by making supply 'sticky', saying items are 'out of stock' etc if they don't play ball and sell online at rrp. However, what the retailer does over the phone or instore is entirely up to him - so ask. If you don't ask you don't get - and besides anything else, you're doing your bit for your community and local economy. It's all very well protesting about Amazon, Ebay and the taxes they don't pay but it's up to us all as consumers to vote with our feet and support our local stores, particularly if they deliver so well on service too. They, and we, have our own U.S.P - people - and let's not forget this is a service industry where the brightest will shine if they consistentlygive the best.
