The Master

Designed by Philippe Starck for Kartell, the Masters Chair pays homage to three iconic chair designs of the twentieth century.

Look closely and you can pick out the silhouette of Arne Jacobsen's Series 7 Chair, Eero Saarinen's much loved Tulip Chair and of course the popular Eames DSR, each design woven into the next.

Now this could have ended in disaster, but Starck's ability to create great design is further proved with this slender hybrid atop a four leg base - design addicts will love it!

Tasty charitable treats

Wonderful Vicky at our Gift Boutique in Preston whipped up a batch of tasty cakes all in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care - a charity close to her heart.

In total, her batch of colourful treats decorated with sugar butterflies, flowers and childhood favourites silver balls, raised £24.00!

The whole team can't wait until she gets busy in the kitchen again so we can tuck into these yummy cakes with our afternoon pot of Earl Grey, virtually guilt free!

Designed by Rowan & Erwan Bouroullec for Magis the Steelwood Stool has a frame in steel plate painted resin with legs and a seat in solid beech. This contrast of these two materials produces a very honest, simple design that manages to look both contemporary and classic - we love it!

Charity news

Here at Utility we are proud to announce that we have adopted North West Cancer Research Fund as our nominated charity to support.

NWCRF is an independent North West based charity that raises money to support research into the treatment of cancer. As a company with roots in Liverpool, we are proud to be associated with such a fantastic, hard working regional charity.

We will be keeping you posted with local events you can join in with over the year to help support NWCRF and look out for further info on our Ladies Night to be held in October in support of NWCRF!

Sunday dinners

I feel like I've missed out a little on my childhood by not having one of these Food Face Plates to eat my Sunday dinners from!

Just put the food on the plate and (fingers crossed) the fun cartoon face will encourage your kids, nieces or nephews to eat up their greens -after a little playing and rearranging of course!

I suspect it's not appropriate for a woman in her twenties to eat from it though - shame.

Chillax in the Slow Chair

Take time out to relax in the Slow Chair designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra.

The generous proportions of the Slow Chair mean that relaxing is the only thing you'll want to do.

Now for the techie bit: The Slow Chair design uses an extremely strong, precisely shaped knit which is stretched over the metal frame - like a fantastic fitted stocking! The translucent sling cover replaces the thick cushions of traditional armchairs, resulting in a design that is lightweight yet generously proportioned.

Soon to be released from Kartell

New release - Kartell Comback Chair

This new design by celebrated architect and designer Patricia Urquiola for Kartell was launched at this years Milan Furniture Fair.

The Comback Chair is a revisited version of the classic Windsor chair -a style typical of 18^th Century England. This revised Comback design is made form a single mould of thermoplastics, allowing extreme comfort, style and durability. Available in several bright colours that confirm this classic style's comeback as a contemporary piece of furniture.

No release date has been announced for the Kartell Comback Chair but we are currently taking registration of interest. Please contact us at info@utilitydesign.co.uk.

There are lots of new releases from Kartell 2010 that we are looking forward to, including the Ghost Buster and Bloom Pendant Light that we already taking orders on (delivery July 2010), Super Impossible Chair, Magic Hole Chair (another design by Philippe Starck and Eugeni Quitlet), Kartell Invisibles seating range, new-look Mademoiselle Moschino armchairs designed by Philippe Starck, and Pop Duo and Plastics Duo modular seating.

Eames DAR updated!

Based on the original 1950s Eames fiberglass design this upholstered polypropylene version of the DAR has been released this year by Vitra.

Available in a range of mid century modern colour fabrics, reflecting the heritage of the DAR, this upholstered version also has various colour options for the outer shell, so if you fancy it, you can get a little creative with your seating!
